Pilot Plant

Pilot plant with its equipment and installations and 500 m2 indoor area is the biggest integrated mineral and coal processing pilot plant laboratory of Turkey. General Directory of Etibank laid a foundation for the establishment of mineral and coal processing pilot plant laboratory in 1984. At present, addition of new modern devices to laboratory led to the successful execution of quality, all technological and scientific researches in mineral and coal processing.

Coal Technology Laboratory

In this laboratory, every kind of physical and chemical properties of coals used as solid fuels for both industrial and household heating systems are determined using modern instruments. Besides, various studies are performed to recover solid, liquid and gases products from coal.

Magnetic Separation Laborator

There are several different types of magnetic and electrostatic separators which are used to separate minerals according to their magnetic and electrostatic features.

Flotation Laboratory

All flotation parameters and flow sheets about flotation processes are carried out with the aim of extending to industrial scale. Various kinds of flotation machines and equipments in this laboratory are available for students and research purposes.

Surface Chemistry Laboratory

It is equipped with micro flotation unit, zeta meter, surface tension measurement device, goniometry and various reagents which are used to understand the mechanism of flotation processes.

Rheology Laboratory

Viscosity and rheological measurements are done using Viscosimeter and rheometer under variable shear strength.

Solution Chemistry Laboratory

Several mechanical stirrers and heaters, one autoclave for pressure leaching, leaching columns, solid/liquid separation-filtration units, mixer-settler apparatus for solvent extraction are available for recovering valuable metals from ores and concentrates.

Sample Preparation Laboratory

Thin sections are prepared to determine mineralogical properties of products obtained from various beneficiation tests.

Process Mineralogy Laboratory

Mineral composition, size distribution, and liberation size of products are determined by the help of various microscopes.

Particle Mechanics Laboratory

Size distribution of products are determined by sedimentation balance, Andreasen pipette, particle size analyzer, and BET surface area analyzer devices are used for different kinds of measurements.

Chemical Analysis Laboratory

In this laboratory, chemical analyses of metals and minerals are accomplished by atomic adsorption, UV spectrometer, XRF device and classic wet methods, C-S analysis equipment, calorimeter, furnaces and dilatometer for analysis of coal.

Precious Metals Laboratory

Furnaces for fire assay analysis, cyanide leaching and vacuum filtration units, titration units for determining reagent consumptions, balances and accessory equipments.

Clay Characterization Laboratory

Clay minerals are utilized in various diverse industrial applications because of their unusual structures. Due to their some advantages, clays such as layered silicate minerals exhibit high adsorption abilities and also high swelling and cation exchange capacities as bentonites are important clay minerals used in many innovative industries at an increasing rate. A numbers of research projects on clay minerals, especially sepiolite, bentonite and kaolin were successfully carried out by our experienced team in our laboratories. These projects lead to the establishment of additional test equipment such as foundry sand mixer, foundry sand test sample preparation apparatus, MINI LAB foundry sand strengths measurement (Compactibility, Wet Comprehensive Strength, Dry Comprehensive Strength, Splitting Strength, Twin Tranverse Strength, Wet Tensile Strength, Gas Permeability), Brookfield Rheometer, Brookfield Viscometer, Fann Viscometer, API Fann Filtration Loss Measurement Equipment, Climate Chamber, Dry grinding-classification system, Dry particle size analyzer, Cation exchange Capacity Measurement Set, Water Bath Mixer, Balances.

Paint Technology Laboratory

Paint is a chemical coating that protect surface against exterior damages and give it decorative view by forming a thin film on the applied surface. There are four main ingredients in paint. These are binders, pigments & extenders, additives and solvents. Mineral Processing Engineering Department can study especially on production and characterization of extenders and some mineral based additives. Investigation of these materials’ effect in the paint is also a study field of the department. In this case, paint production and optical & physical characterization of the paint can be realized in paint technology laboratory which is financially supported by TUBITAK TARAL and ITU BAP projects. Devices and facilities in the paint technology laboratory are mixer for paint production, automatic film applicator, grindometer, measurement of wet and dry film thickness, opacity measurement, glossmeter, adhesion force measurement, scrub and impact resistance measurement, Bucholz hardness measurement and Krebs viscosimeter.
